Iomega 33748 USB 2.0 1TB 2HD x 500GB Desktop Hard Drive Review

Brand : Iomega
This hard drive works great, and stores a lot. I use a mac, and the TimeMachine backup program just automatically recognizes this iomega HD and starts storing to it right away.
But two or three caveats:
1) this is an older model, discontinued by iomega (their newer hds are smaller and lighter), so the company website doesn't readily show your model for support or information. This came to be a hassle when I had a mishap. See 2)
2) if you use a mac and TimeMachine for backing up, be careful if you have a need to either reinstall your OS (computer crash, that rare mac incident, but it happens), or if you decide to use this hd with a second mac. In that case, the TimeMachine program may automatically begin to replace the stored data with new data, in other words it will seem to be erased. See 3)
3) if the iomega has data stored in a format designated by a backup program for you, say, mac's TimeMachine program, which labels the backups under the name of the computer hard drive (say, Macintosh HD), then new backups from the same computer with the same name, or a reinstalled user account on the same computer with the same name, or a second computer with the same hd name, will not realize that the stored files already on the iomega need to be saved.
4) I had a computer crash after using the iomega hd for about a year; my computer's reinstalled hd used the same name as the prior incarnation; the TimeMachine failed to recognize the old stored backups, and began to create new file backups using the same name as the prior ones, effectively erasing the old ones - or so it seems. I've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for a few weeks, and if I had immediately contacted Iomega I might have been under warranty - but I waited about a week too long. Because I bought it from a third-party seller through Amazon, the older model serial number was identified by iomega's website as out of warranty. It might have been identified as such even if I bought it yesterday, however, because I didn't buy it from Iomega, I bought it after it was already on the discontinued model list from a third party seller. So beware:
*register the software/hardware with the manufacturer as soon as you install it.
*backups are only as secure as the relationship between the external hard drive and your computer; if either are compromised you need to burn a hard copy of the backed up files or risk losing them once you re-initiate the link between hard drives after restoration of the computer system.
*contact the manufacturer of both computer and external hard drive if you have a problem, as soon as possible; it might still be in warranty, which helps in getting any support. You would not believe how hard it is to get any kind of information once you are out of warranty.
My take-away from all this? Don't rely only on the ext. hd or on the computer or on the backup program alone; make it a point to know what the repercussions are if there is a breakdown at any stage of these devices or softwares. Burn a hard copy at least quarterly, and label it. Create separate folders in the ext. hard drive for storage of a separate backup, and periodically replace this with a more recent one. Then if the automatically created backups become lost or corrupted, hopefully the one you have made and self-labeled will still exist to replace your backed up data.
Good luck, plan ahead, take precautions. Be proactive.
