I bought this drive for my media center pc, and it is great. The price was right and it serves its purpose. Drive is relatively quiet and doesn't rev up like some drives, which is important in a family room situation. Not much more to say, it's a hard drive and it works great!





Currently the fastest-throughput drive for the price - Aaron702 - Central Illinois, USA
Seagate had issues with a firmware update that caused a lot of users problems early in 2009. This was unfortunate, as Seagate's Barracuda line has always been the top or next to the top, in throughput. So basically, the people who buy Barracudas are looking for something pretty good for their system.

Fortunately, this drive, so far, runs very well. We purchased two of the 1 TB drives and are using them in a RAID configuration. They run pretty quiet and they are truly fast.

The bulk drive normally comes in a cheap cardboard box with a wrap or two of bubble-wrap. This does not truly isolate the drive, as, when purchased from another vendor, one arrived with a broken SATA port. This was sent back for a refund, and I got its replacement from Amazon.

Amazon ships it in a cardboard box, but it is much better insulated, with plenty of space around the drive and the two ends being housed in shock-absorbing plastic. It looks cheap, but you soon realize it is the most practical way to get a bulk drive shipped.

This is a good buy for anyone wanting speed, low noise, and capacity as a low price.

I got this drive specifically to use in my Antec MX-100 3.5-Inch USB Aluminum Enclosure. Both came highly recommended by reviewers. The enclosure is passively cooled, so I was very interested in the lower heat generation of this unit. And it does run pretty cool.

So far I've been very happy with this unit. I don't use my external drive more than a few times a month, but I haven't had any problems. It seems just as speedy as my other external drive. The capacity for the price was a very good deal and I've had pretty good experiences with Western Digital hard drives.

My only concern, the Western Digital Green drives are built to be more energy efficient than most other drives. From what I've read, they do this by parking their drive heads more often than other hard drives. This scares me a little, because stopping and starting tends to cause more wear and tear on mechanical parts. I'd be a little hesitant to use one of these as my main drive inside my computer, until I saw some long term reports on lifespan.

1st one of these DOA, 2nd one worked, but failed in <5 days - Anthony N. Lyne -
I have never had issues like this in the past with western digital drives. I have 4 raptor drives and wanted one of these for media storage and backup. It was a big mistake. My first drive was Dead on Arrival. I got it RMA'd and got the replacement. The replacement worked but I was seeing 1MB/sec writes speeds with the drive. It took me about 20 hours to transfer 136GB of data from one internal drive to this one. A few days later windows is reporting this drive as about to fail and that I should backup immediately. I assume this is the SMART technology. I'm shipping this unit back and getting a 1MB Black (not green) drive so I can hopefully have some better luck.

Summary: unusable in a RAID array, incredibly loud and annoying on Linux.

I ordered three of these drives and they're all going back as defective.

They look inexpensive and folks give them good reviews; I talked to people who used them in their desktop setups. It turns out that Western Digital, at some point, changed the drives they were making so that they no longer work under a RAID setup. The drives routinely fault out of the array all because you can't turn off TLER. (Check wikipedia's article on Time-Limited Error Recovery if you want the gory details.) Also, when used on a Linux computer, they make a horrible loud clicking noise every ten seconds as the heads are parked and un-parked due to routine disk access. Nowhere on Western Digital's spec page about the drive does it say "do not use in a RAID setup" or "do not use in Linux."

Hey, Western Digital: lots of desktop computers (Dells, for instance) ship with RAID 0 or RAID 1 setups these days! It's no longer an "enterprise" feature, so you might want to make sure your drives work with it!

From scouring the web, it turns out that the "sub"-model number and build date are important. My three drives were WD15EADS-00P8B0, built Nov 2009, firmware 01.00A01. There are reports that older build-date drives can be made to work; true or not, mine could not. Western Digital's customer service is of zero help, blaming the problem on everything but the drive.

No more Western Digital drives for me, ever. I've put WD drives in my last three builds because they're inexpensive and reliable, but no longer. Back to Seagate drives (yes, even after their ST31500341AS firmware debacle)!

Due to poor packing of these drives (Boxes where not really secure in larger box, drives were not packed with foam or plastic retainer, subjected to shock of being bounced around) I have no idea if MTBF has been significantly reduced. My gut feeling is yes, it has. But until the drives fail, I will not know. I expect the lifetime of the drives to be about 3 yrs.

Some background on me. I have been doing work in the IT field for almost 20yrs now. This is the worst packaging of Hard Drives I have seen. Although the pictures of where Amazon sent the drives in a slim envelope/card board was pretty scary. I hope to update this post around the 90 day mark to see if either drive has failed.

1/8/2010 - Later in the afternoon/early evening.

After talking to others in our IT department, it seems that this style of product packaging is becoming more prevalent and I should really wait the 90 days before passing judgement. "Yes it is new style packaging, yes it looks flimsy. No, it really is not." was the message I got. Okay, my intestinal fortitude is still not where I would like it, but I am willing to give it a go. If I pass the 30 day mark without drive failure, I will mark up a star. If I pass the 90 day mark without a drive failure, I will give a whole hearted endorsement.

A fewMonths, I began testing article marketing. Since I am writing articles for my blog I thought it would be difficult to re-post an article every now and then an article repository / distribution site.

In most cases, your backlink campaign brings in links to the websites who know, just like yours, not many people. However, you should not be discouraged. If the owner of this site are to be just like you, a long-term strategy for producing a great resource website or blog is also obliged to collect their website, backlinks, get exposure and increase in PageRank, which in turn will benefit youWebsite. Help each other in this sense bring together high-quality sites over time.

In a variety of ways the Internet also provides very slowly. The dissemination of information, it can be fast, but by design, search engines will not quickly drive traffic to your website. Steps you take today to improve your site in search engines, will not necessarily have an impact until months later. Unique content, celebrity status and good networking can give you fast transport, but if you're like most people, you arefalling in most "working class" online and you have to earn your chances over time through hard work.

Assessing Your Backlinks

Google updates PageRank once every three months at best, and in that time millions of new websites are born, that start off with no PR at all. In assessing your new backlinks be sure to browse through each site to you and check the followingPoints:

How good is the content? Can - Is it all original or reproduced, you (the spot reproduced content of the author bylines everywhere).

How much movement is going on in terms of new topics for blogs (monthly, weekly, daily, several times a day) or new articles for standard websites. Also check how much work is done by the Community, is made in the forums and comments to blogs.

Lookup the backlinks of the site, which has only to you in connection with an indication of it get'sPopularity. Make sure to do this in Google, Yahoo! and MSN Search, if you want a good spread of data.

If you are really doing deep research, maintains a history of Web searches) archive (http://web.archive.org and see how long the site is online and how it has changed over the years.

One can spend hours checking your backlinks so remember to return to productive work and not spend too much time indulging your ego by seeing who is linking to your site. Backlinks play aimportant component of search engine optimization strategy offers one of the best indicators for assessing the results of your hard work.

Seagate is known for their Barracuda hard drives. Currently, this is the only manufacturer I would buy a drive from since several La Cie drives failed because of faulty enclosures. After I had taken out 3-4 drives out of their enclosures and trashed them (still have the drives) another La Cie drive starting acting up so I took it out of it's enclosure and discovered it was the power connector to the circuit board, it was not making contact for some reason so it kept powering off and on, I fixed it so the connectors were always in contact and the drive now works perfectly, no power issues. I never had this problem with Seagate drives and because of this they are my brand for now on. I'm a film maker and artist and can't afford to lose any data.

added a second hd for my sons computer so we could install some of the games he received as gifts.
this is perfect for extra storage. using it under win xp- after a simple format- it was ready to roll- works just fine- not noisy.
It appears they use a special packaging to hold the hard drive in place in the box. good idea.
remember when you buy oem hard drives- you do not get the little screws to hold them in place-
also have a spare sata cable on hand for the install.

Quiet, fast, low energy consumption. Purchased one 7200.12 at a local retailer for use in an Apple Mac Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 as an upgrade for my 7200.7 160 GB Seagate media drive. So pleased with it I purchased a second from Amazon to swap out my boot drive too. Had good luck with Seagate and Western Digital drives so I stick to what has worked for me.

First, I would like to say that Seagate customer service was very responsive and responded to my RMA request quickly and professionally. I sent in a request and the CS rep contacted me over email and was very courteous. When I explained my problem he told me to send it in for RMA. I shipped my drive in and in about 2 weeks got my replacement drive.

The bad news is that the replacement drive seems to have the same problem. I have been trying to install Windows 7 and Steam (a game download service) on this drive. The problems began after installing Win7 and Steam and I started downloading my games. I would get an hour or two into the download and my system would hang. Not an application failure, not a blue screen, it would completely freeze. I've only ever seen that happen with a hard drive failure. On top of that, when the system finally reset itself, the Seagate drive would not be visible to the system BIOS, i.e. the drive was non-responsive. If I did a full shut down and cold start, the drive would come back online.

I am quite certain it isn't my system or Win7. I've been using my system with Vista Home 64-bit (installed on a WD drive) for over a year and it's been rock-solid stable. Overnight downloads were no problem, games, Photoshop, etc. no problem. I've installed Win7 on my laptop and it is totally stable.

However, once I started using this drive bad things started to happen and just last night I got a warning from Windows that the Seagate drive was failing. This is with my new replacement drive. Whatever the problem is, it is very very intermittent which makes it hard to pin down, but when it happens, it's pretty catastrophic. Total system lockup.

I know that if I contact Seagate CS, their service will send me a new drive if I ask for it, but what's the point? I've already had two of these drives in a row get flakey on me including a new replacement drive.

I'll probably just accept that I ate 0 on this drive and go get a Western Digital drive to replace it.
