When Networking Meets Ego - Ouch!

Tearing off the plaster networking ...

A buddy of mine, Dave, said the following about networks in search of a job:

Have I think many people would be out of work pursue a difficult time "friends / acquaintances for job leads (a few friends - yes ... others - no) - I think egos the center of the stage and fall rather In the "privacy" of the job search engine, as they expose themselves to the neighborhood gossip. If there is a way to properly position the 'Contact'with friends / acquaintances who taught your search / favor possible in a professional manner. I think many people in the "Hello Joe ... blah, blah blah caught ... you know someone who is setting? No. Ok .. thank you."

Dave rather brutally honest stuff, and I think he is absolutely right. In order to network with the pros, you have to humiliate themselves in a manner that is not always comfortable. You also need to go out and unafraid to ask the help of his closest friends. You must also convenient to introduce the friend knew of a man your brother, your sister's math tutor when he was out.

Why is networking so difficult?

Here's my theory is linked with collective had been unemployed as well as employees:

First, most people out there networking do not know what to do. You can e-mail, but do not know what to say. You can not know up to a networking event, however, how to approach someone. You can call a recruiter does not understand the difference between retained and contingent firms. They also give up too easily (Dave's point, above)

Second, they are proud. They were bosses, decision makers, budget money coming from donors and the person who came all the advice at work. That has made me proud, too. It's incredibly hard to ask for help, who can by a person in a previous life and a future, two or three layers of you. You just need toBattle is through them.

Third, they provide no special features to their network. If you do not say, your network, how it can help you ... guess what, it can not help. When we showed up to several networking events with a resume, but no plan (no special features on your target industry, job type / level, city and company) and the retirement track record of nothing, maybe it seems like a lot of hard return to work without. As some say, a long run for a short film.

The good news is thatCrosslinking can be done successfully and intelligently without excessive cold calls and networking uncomfortable conversations. It starts with building a strategy and the establishment of micro-networks that can and should help you want.

Oh, and if you see Dave, I'm sure he would love to chat.
